DJ Clint Kuper - Sugar Sugar Demo
So i have successfully completed my first week aboard the Epic. I have discovered this type of DJ’ing is definitley not for the faint of heart. It is very difficult to deliver an original and top level performance night after night (and sometimes two or even three times a day!) regardless of your mood and how you feel. But on the other hand, anyone who can accomplish this gig will come out a better and more rounded DJ. Soca, Reggae, Latin, Retro, Party Classics, Top 40, Hip Hop…it’s all in the mix every night. You are catering to people from all over the world and across every age range. It has been one of the more challenging gigs of my career. But I have discovered new styles and tracks that I will be taking home with me and incorporating into my sets!
I am finally not walking around perpetually lost all the time. The seas are much more calm as well. We are currently in the Eastern Carribbean heading for Costa Maya tomorrow. On Tuesday we will be visiting Roatan which is an island off of Honduras and is home to the second largest coral reef in the world. I asked around and found out a lot of the Blue Man crew are also divers so I have some diving buddies to show me around! I have wanted to dive Roatan since I picked up my first diving magazine and saw the pictures.
Tonight is the White Hot Party out at Spice H20. This is consistently the biggest party of the week. Looking forward to rocking this out tonight!

Lots of little shops and restaurants to keep you endlessly entertained. The main shopping/tourist is about a 10 minute walk from where the ship docks, but I decided to take the water taxi to the area to get a panoramic view. Found a great litte Indian restaurant right off the main drag and had lunch with a crew member named Augustine. He’s from India and eats there every time we come to St. Marteen so I knew I was in the right place. Talked soccer and had a nice lunch and a chat.
Yesterday was another day at sea. We were moving at a brisk pace to make up the time we lost retuning to Miami and the weather was less than ideal for my outdoor Latin party at Spice H20. I ended up only playing about an hour and a half with one hand on my laptop to keep it from blowing away! The wind was crazy! Between my laptop squirming around all over and the boat rocking all over I was feeling a litte sick…but I decided to head down to the Crew Bar deep inside the ship to relax for a minute before I checked in on Wali at Bliss. I’m pretty sure it’s a crackin’ party in there every night of the week. No exception that night either! It was also crew bingo night so spirits were high…
This morning was a required emergency lifeboat and emergency drill. As a guest entertainer I am only required to participate once during my stay but the rest of the crew does it twice a week! These guys are ready.
So tonight I wll be performing at Bliss tonght after a quick one hour set at Spice H20 for a sunset sail away party. I don’t think that anyone aboard sleeps 8 hours at a time. I’m quickly discovering that life at sea is a never ending series of catnaps. But the culture of hospitality of the entire crew and their desire to make me comfortable is humbling. Definitely something you do not see on an average day back in the United States!
Permalink / Comments | Tags: #NCLEpic, cruise, DJ, NCL, travelWow! All I can say is hectic! I flew to Minneapolis via a red eye. I arrived in Miami and immediately took a cab to the seaport.
First impression of the ship is big! I was signed aboard and visited personnel for my room assignment. Cruise ships are confusing and disorienting when you are a passenger…but in the depths of the ship it all looks exactly the same and you have no idea if you are heading forward or aft of the ship. I took quesstioning about 20 crew members and about 45 minuted to finally find my room.
As soon as I dropped off my records, laptop, and mixer to my room I had to attend a 45 minute new crew safety orientation. Again…the endless maze of the ship and the crew areas are crazy! I had trouble finding the office and showed up about 10 minutes late. While I was waiting for the tour to start, the other guest DJ, Wali aka DJ Daddy Dog showed up. Fortunately there were people more confused than me and the meeting started late.
After the whirlwind saftey tour I was met by the house DJ Patrick. Patrick is an employee of NCL and is signed aboard a six month tour. He let us know that our first event was right away on the top pool deck to celebrate the departure of the ship. Straight to work!
After we successfully finished our first party, all I wanted was a shower and a nap afer all the sun, sweat, rush, and lack of sleep. No suck luck. All of my clothes and shower needs are in my checked luggage whick was currently missing. Another trip down to the center of the ship and an extremely frusturating two hour search finally found our luggage.
After getting my bags back to my room, getting showered, and a little unpacking I noticed the time and only had about an hour left before I had to be at my next event at Spice H20 at 9:30. I was really nervous that if i napped I wouldn’t wake up so I decided to push through. My room has no windows so when you shut off the lights and close the door you lose all sense of time!
Spice H20 is located on the top of the ship. It is an outdoor venue that is actually the adults only pool that the deck of the pool is covered and is converted into a dance floor! It also has an enormous LED video screen that backdrops the dancefloor. Awesome.
Generally the first night of the cruise is a little more chill I was told. The passengers are usualy tired and still getting their bearings on the ship. But by 11:30 we had a full dance party going and it was a super good vibe.
After we closed down Spice H20 at about 2:00am I checked in on Wali at the other main venue on the Epic, the Bliss Ultra Lounge. This is a super sexy club type lounge complete with a bowling alley (one of two onboard!) Wali had a good dance floor going and kept it going till about 3:00am.
Patrick, Wali, and I all got something to eat and wrapped up the day. For me 26 hours later. Big day.
Day 2 is a sea day and we are a little behind. Apparently there was a medical emergency last night aboard and we had to bring the passenger back to Miami for care. But we are moving at a brisk pace and are slated for an on time arrival into St. Marteen the day after tomorrow.
Wali and I only have one party today. He will be at Spice H20 doing the “White Hot Heat” party and I’ll be at Bliss. This is a rare day that we only have one event so I am taking the opportunity to take care of the rest of my sign aboard duties liek getting my crew badge and getting some money into my account so I can purchase things on the ship. We also have a 2:00pm meeting with Simon, the cruise director.
Looking forward to starting to get my bearings over the next few days and start knowing where I’m going!
